The measurement of energy expenditure is used to assess metabolic needs, fuel utilization, and the relative thermic effect of different food, drink, activities and/or pharmaceuticals. Where high accuracy is required an indirect calorimetry system can be used to measure H2O, O2 and CO2 concentrations. Indirect calorimetry systems may employ masks, hoods, canopies or room/chambers for collection of expired air. Comparative translational research from rodents to ruminants can extend the scope of exercise performance research, especially in relation to atmospheric or environmental challenges.
