The MAD-1 activity detector is a versatile motion detector designed for mouse to squirrel sized animals in chambers and cages. It operates by monitoring the force the cage platform exerts on sensitive force transducers. Any movement by the animal in the cage or chamber causes a shift in the balance between the force transducers' signals that is amplified and employed as a non-invasive index of activity. 

Activity detectors are useful for separating episodes of activity and inactivity for behavioral assays and especially for respirometry. If you are trying to measure the inactive or "resting" metabolic rate of any animal, activity will corrupt your measurements. The MAD-1 activity detector provides an objective determination of activity that can be recorded as a voltage signal. Thus, it is an essential component of a research-grade respirometry system.

The MAD-1 activity detector uses uncritical 9 - 18VDC at very low power (< 30 mA). Multiple units can be daisy-chained for ease of connection. In the case of multiple-animal respirometry systems, the Sable Systems RM-8 respirometry chamber multiplexer can direct the electrical signal from the appropriate MAD-1 to a data acquisition system.
