PC-4 Overview Print

The PC-4 sample dryer condenses water vapor from an airstream, drying the airstream to a dewpoint of 1 degree C (user-settable between 1 and 5 C). This reduces the water vapor pressure in the airstream to no more than 0.66 kPa (at 1 C), at which point the dilution effect of water vapor in the air sample is negligible in many applications.

Most forms of gas analysis require the scrubbing of water vapor from the airstream, because the water vapor dilutes the measured gases. Scrubbing water vapor usually requires chemicals that require frequent replacement. The PC-4 is an economical and efficient alternative to scrubber chemicals in the medium to long term. Even if completely dry air is required, using the PC-4 as a pre-scrubber will greatly reduce the amount of scrubber chemicals consumed.

The PC-4 uses a space-age solid-state heat pump to maintain a precision-milled condenser plate at the precise set temperature (user-selectable at 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 degrees C). Condensed water is evacuated from the condenser by a miniature diaphragm pump at user-settable intervals. Alternatively, a simple plumbing change allows the user to remove condensate slowly and continuously with a user-supplied peristataltic pump. Flow rates ranging from about 25 ml/minute to 5 liters/minute can be used without affecting the system's drying efficiency.
