Small Animal Respirometry SA-3 Print

Our SA-3 scanning small animal respirometry system produces accurate, reproducible data from animals from small reptiles and amphibians up through mice in size. It can be used in push or pull mode, but is usually used in pull mode with our live-in respirometry cages that allow mice access to continuous food and water. It incorporates a water vapor pressure analyzer for flow and dilution compensation without requiring scrubber chemicals. From three to 15 animals can be sequentially scanned; the standard is 7. When requesting a quote, please mention the number of animals you wish to scan.

The SA-3 scanning small animal respirometry system is normally supplied with both oxygen and carbon dioxide analyzers, and measures oxygen consumption rate, CO2 production rate, RQ, and water loss rate. Using RQ, the respiratory substrate of the test animal can be determined, allowing accurate translation of gas exchange measurements to energy equivalents, e.g. Watts, Joules/hr or calories/day. Activity detectors are optional.

Data acquisition is fully automatic, using our acclaimed ExpeData™ software, the product of over twenty years' experience in computerized data acquisition and analysis. Complete user control over every aspect of the system's operation is supported. Baselining and switching between animals are fully automated. The analysis of acquired data is uniquely flexible and can also be fully automated, if desired. The respirometry equations used in the system are state-of-the-art.

All necessary tubing and accessories are supplied with the system. Lifetime technical support by published experts in respirometry is included.

The SA-3 scanning small animal respirometry system differs from our biomedical line of metabolic screening systems in its extreme flexibility, which comes at the price of a greater requirement for understanding the principles of respirometry, and a larger time-investment on the part of the user. In a busy biomedical facility it may be difficult to find personnel willing and able to set up and use this system properly. Thus, we strongly recommend that biomedical users acquire one of our explicitly biomedically-oriented metabolic screening systems instead.
