If you shop around for thermocouple meters, you will find very few that meet twelve critical criteria for temperature meters in scientific and industrial R&D applications:

  1. Linearized voltage outputs with multiple ranges suitable for direct connection to A/D boards
  2. Relevant temperature range of -100 to +125°C (Note: A high temperature range version of the TC-2000 is available!)
  3. High resolution - 0.01°C
  4. Battery powerable, for portability and to avoid grounding problems
  5. Configured for type T (copper/constantan) thermocouples that are corrosion and moisture resistant; Type K version with wider range but slightly lower resolution available as an option
  6. Able to obtain data from four thermocouples at once and deliver analog and digital outputs for all channels at once
  7. Digital readout that displays to 0.01°C on all channels simultaneously
  8. RS-232 output for serial data acquisition by any laptop or desktop computer
  9. Normal, differential and min/max operating modes
  10. Built-in routines for fast calibration against standard temperatures, if required for standards adherence
  11. Fast sampling rate (at least 5 Hz) for following rapid changes
  12. Variable averaging for tailoring response speed to any application

Our TC-2000 thermocouple meter meets all of these criteria. You will acquire accurate data from this rugged, reliable, research-grade instrument for years to come at a very affordable price. It uses inexpensive, reliable type T thermocouples as temperature sensors (no corrosion or water damage/drift problems!), and is fully amplified, linearized and compensated. No additional amplifiers, filters or cold-junction calculations are necessary. It is battery-powerable from any 8 - 20VDC source or its own internal batteries (6xAA not included). It can be used in stand-alone mode or with any voltage-input or serial-input data acquisition system, and it comes standard with four independent thermocouple channels. It is constructed of the highest quality components, is hardened against static electricity (ESD) damage, and resistant to radio frequency interference (RFI). In addition, the TC-2000 can operate in any temperature unit you wish - °C, °F or Kelvin!

The TC-2000 offers unusually high resolution and excellent accuracy. Why do we say that?

First, let us deal with resolution. Commercial thermocouple preamplifiers typically yield resolutions of about 0.5 - 0.1°C. The TC-2000's low noise circuitry yields reliable resolution of 0.01°C. Consequently it reveals trends and signals that are obscured by the booming, buzzing noise of inferior meters. The last significant digit of the TC-2000's panel display (0.01°C) will exhibit NO noise or flicker if you are measuring a stable temperature.

The TC-2000's accuracy is typically ±0.2°C across its extraordinarily wide operating temperature range of 0 to 60°C. (Note that this is the operating range of the meter; its measuring range is -100 to +125°C, witth a wider range version, the TC-2000K, available). This is a very conservative error estimate. Under ideal conditions (using ideal thermocouple materials), the TC-2000 is capable of better than 0.05°C accuracy according to our computer models. Actual production models show no significant deviations from ideality versus our hideously expensive Ectron NIST-traceable thermocouple calibrator with a rated accuracy of 0.1°C. Channel matching is typically 0.02°C or better.

You might wonder why the TC-2000 is supplied for only one thermocouple type (type T or type K), while there is a plethora of cheap plastic thermocouple meters that can measure from several different thermocouple types. The answer is that accuracy must be sacrificed for such versatility. Supporting multiple thermocouple materials requires that the temperature of the thermocouple plug contacts at the copper/copper input socket must be accurately known so that icepoint compensation is accurately calculated. The input contact temperature can fluctuate widely, and cannot be reliably tracked in practice to the precision we demand. In the TC-2000, the icepoint junction is buried in a thermally isolated well. This superior technique is only possible if there is no change in thermocouple material between the input socket and the junction within the well. Hence the TC-2000's accuracy is made possible by using one type of thermocouple, and using it well - so, do not confuse the TC-2000 with the disposable meters on sale elsewhere.

Such accuracy normally requires frequent calibration. Remarkably, the compact, portable TC-2000 requires no periodic re-calibration. The TC-2000's calibrations are performed automatically, in the background, by its built-in microcomputer, using lab-grade internal standards. Moreover, these calibrations are repeated many times per minute while the unit is operating. The same microcomputer linearizes the thermocouples' responses and implements ice-point compensation to extraordinary levels of accuracy, using official NIST data and extensively validated proprietary, 32-bit floating-point algorithms. It also checks the operational status of the meter and warns you immediately in the unlikely event that a fault develops. Thus, you can always rely on the quality of data you obtain from the TC-2000.

We recognize that some standards authorities require periodic calibration of temperature meters, so we have also included a comprehensive calibration facility in the TC-2000. Using a quality thermocouple calibrator or any two suitable temperature standards (the triple points of mercury, water or gallium), you can re-calibrate your TC-2000 any time you wish.

The TC-2000's analog outputs have no less than twenty ranges, so you'll never be at a loss for a range that's perfect for your application. And, the analog outputs are re-calibrated against the TC-2000's internal standards at every turn-on, so the four analog outputs are accurate and very closely matched - you'll never need individual calibrations. The TC-2000 even calculates the transfer equation relating volts to °C for each range, and displays the appropriate equation for the chosen range on its alphanumeric display on turn-on, or when choosing ranges!

The TC-2000 has three operating modes - normal (showing all four temperatures at once on its four-line display); differential (showing all four temperatures plus the differentials (channel 1 - channel 2) and (channel 3 - channel 4)), or min-max (showing all four temperatures plus the maximum and minimum temperature measured on each channel since the last reset). The min-max mode is very easy to reset; simply press ENTER.

All aspects of the TC-2000's operation are controlled via a simple, intuitive menu system that's a pleasure to operate. All settings are permanently stored in non-volatile memory with a retention time of > 100 years.

Apart from its general usefulness the TC-2000 can also be used for controlling temperatures, using ExpeData's sophisticated built-in temperature-controlling ability or any suitable third-party controller.

The TC-2000 is guaranteed for three years. It comes with free, lifetime technical support. A 120 VAC to 12 VDC adapter is included with the unit (other input voltages are available to special order).

A set of four male thermocouple plugs with attached type T thermocouples (1 meter, 24 gauge) is included free with each TC-2000. With the TC-2000K, the thermocouple type is type K, welded using our in-house precision thermocouple welder.
