Metabolic Screening for Small Animals Print

Our primary metabolic screening system for the biomedical market is our SM-MARS system. "MARS" stands for Multiple Animal Respirometry System, and the SM version is optimized for small mammals such as mice. Live-in cages are standard, allowing the animals access to food and water. SM-MARS systems come with on-site setup and training worldwide, followed by lifetime technical support at no additional charge. Our systems carry a unique three year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship.

Please do not confuse our metabolic screening systems with those produced by competitors lacking any credible scientific credentials in the field of animal respirometry. The president of Sable Systems International is an internationally recognized researcher and expert in the field, and has literally written the book on the subject. Unlike the competition, our systems preserve all of their raw data, which can be re-analyzed at any time. Every single step leading from the raw to the final data is meticulously documented and preserved. "Black box" systems, such as the competition's, are coming under ever-increasing attack by reputable scientists. With our systems, you will never have to mistrust the integrity and traceability of your data, and can publish with confidence now and in the future.

The SM-MARS system is available in the following configurations:

SM-MARS-X where X is the maximum number of animals to be scanned. Standard numbers are 4, 8 and 16. The system can be expanded after purchase.

SM-MARS-XA where A denotes non-invasive activity monitoring of all animals, which is highly recommended.

Thus, an 8 channel system with activity monitoring would be specified as an SM-MARS-8A.

Being biological scientists, we are well aware that mice at standard laboratory temperatures are thermally stressed and exhibit an elevated metabolic rate. This is a fact of which many users of biomedical metabolic screening systems are not aware. As a consequence, most metabolic measurements on mice in the biomedical literature are amalgams of the animal's real metabolic rate and its response to hypothermic stress. Should you wish to avoid this almost universal error, we can work with you to fit a temperature control system within your space and budget. Because the requirements will differ widely from one installation to another, temperature control systems are quoted on a case-by-case basis.
