The Metabolic Physiology Meeting 2026 recently marked its fourth successful year on the scenic shores of Hilton Head Island.

This year METPHYS2026 cast a spotlight on exciting advances in nutrient sensing and energy balance, regulatory mechanisms controlling metabolic flux, metabolic paths to cell death, cancer metabolism, immunometabolism, and cardiovascular health.

By bridging these different areas of metabolism research, the event sparked vibrant discussions and facilitated the development of new collaborative opportunities.

The Sable Award

Each year, the Metabolic Physiology Meeting is capped with the presentation of “The Sable Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Metabolic Physiology.”

The 2026 Sable Award is shared by Scott Dixon, Professor of Biology at Stanford University,  and Erika Pearce, Department of Oncology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Scott was recognized for his pioneering contributions to our understanding of Ferroptosis, a metabolic pathway to cell death. Erika was celebrated for her foundational work establishing the vital role that metabolism plays in T-lymphocyte function. Erika and Scott presented back-to-back Sable Award lectures to close this year’s meeting and shared the $20,000 honorarium. They join fellow luminaries Kathryn Wellen, Shingo Kajimura, and Kıvanç Birsoy as Sable Award Recipients.
