The Metabolic Physiology Meeting 2025 brought together pioneers, innovators and leaders representing metabolic physiology research from around the world. It was the third edition of a yearly scientific meeting hosted by Phillip White and the White-McGarrah Lab with the support of partner Sable Systems International and generous sponsors Lucid Scientific, SomaLogic, and Vanderbilt MMPC Vibrant.
The meeting featured the latest advances in molecular mechanisms governing metabolic homeostasis, nutrient sensing, metabolic flux, cancer metabolism, and immunometabolism. It provided a dynamic forum for discussion and networking – bridging the many distinct domains of metabolic physiology research.

The Sable Award
Each year, the Metabolic Physiology Meeting is capped with the presentation of “The Sable Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Metabolic Physiology.” The 2025 recipient is Professor Kivanç Birsoy. Dr. Birsoy is the Chapman-Perelman Associate Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Metabolic Regulation and Genetics at Rockefeller University. He was selected for his outstanding contributions to understanding the metabolic networks that influence cancer cell survival, including his recent exciting discovery of the mitochondrial glutathione carrier and the molecular mechanisms governing mitochondrial glutathione autoregulation. The Sable Lecture was presented with a $20,000 honorarium at the meeting.

The 2026 Sable Award recipient will be selected from the METPHYS2025 invited speakers by a panel comprising Kivanc Birsoy and previous Sable Award winners Kathryn Wellen and Shingo Kajimura, as well as past and present keynote speakers Craig Thompson, David James and Bruce Spiegelman.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Many thanks to this year’s keynote speaker Craig B. Thompson, MD, for his presentation Mitochondrial Heterogeneity is Required for Cellular Adaption to Changing Environmental Conditions. Dr. Thompson leads his research group at the Sloan Kettering Institute within Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he served as President and CEO from 2010 to 2022. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition, he is a fellow of the American Association for Cancer Research and serves on the Lasker Award Committee, the medical advisory board of HHMI, the board of directors at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Charles River Laboratories, and is a founder of Agios Pharmaceuticals.
Widely recognized for his pioneering contributions to immunology, cancer biology, and translational medicine, Craig is particularly well-known for his groundbreaking work in cancer metabolism. His ongoing research focuses on how cellular metabolism is regulated during cell growth and differentiation, as well as how metabolic changes contribute to the development and progression of cancer. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Craig has been honored with numerous notable awards, including the Watanabe Prize, the Vallee Award, the Drexel Prize in Cancer Biology, the ASCO Science of Oncology Award, and the ASCI Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award.
