Diabetes is primarily a chronic metabolic disease involving the inability to correctly regulate blood sugar.  This can lead to heart disease, neuropathy, liver disease, and vision loss.   The prevalence of diabetes has increased to >400 million affected individuals so substantial efforts are being made to understand the disease.
