Diabetes by the Numbers

  • 34.2 million US adults have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t know they have it.
  • Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Diabetes is the No. 1 cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and adult blindness.
  • In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled.

cdc.gov/diabetes/basics/diabetes.html

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder. The measurement of energy expenditure and food consumed (energy balance) are critical components in evaluating the effectiveness of treatments as well as gaining insight into the changes in metabolic pathways due to diabetes.

Important System Considerations

  • Metabolic measurement capability (RER, VO2, VCO2)
  • Specific nutrient utilization
  • Food and water intake with automated access control; paired or yoked feeding capacity
  • Activity monitoring
