Exercise is considered a key tool in the prevention or treatment of metabolic disorders. Exercise powerfully affects energy balance. Besides the changes caused by a single exercise session, regular exercise induces chronic adaptations, improving exercise capacity and affecting energy balance.

Exercise affects many aspects of physiology. Therefore, the study of the effects of exercise in human and animal models is greatly benefited by comprehensive phenotyping. Comprehensive phenotyping includes changes in metabolism, ingestive behavior, and activity. This enables researchers to better understand how exercise helps to prevent or treat metabolic disorders and improve the human condition.

Important System Considerations

  • Metabolic measurement (RER, VO2, VCO2)
  • Specific nutrient utilization
  • Food and water intake with automated access control
  • Activity monitoring, total and running
