DESCRIPTION

The Promethion Core™ CGF (Combined Gas Analyzers and Flow Regulation) represents the latest technology in gas analyzers and flow generators. The CGF includes water vapor, CO2 and O2 analysis. Each analyzer path is contained on a unique Sable engineered blade designed for simple configuration and to minimize lag effects that complicate data analysis. At the core of these analyzers is SableHD™ high definition technology, enabling industry leading resolution on all analyzers.

The gas analyzers sample air from the flow selected by the flow generator. The air stream is directed through a manifold, from which a flow controller pulls out an aliquot of the main flow that is then sent through the water vapor analyzer, CO2 analyzer, and O2 analyzer.

The housing interior is regulated at a constant 37°C, which provides a stable environment for the analyzers and prevents condensation. The CGF also contains an accurate, high resolution barometric pressure analyzer. The CGF performs automated gas and scrubber column calibrations. Calibration gases are connected to the system and can be switched in for O2 and CO2 calibrations as needed. Similarly, an internal chemical scrubber column is switched into the airstream. This scrubber column removes water vapor from the airstream passing through it, and is used to calibrate the water vapor analyzer using the technique of O2 dilution. Optionally, it can also remove CO2 and zero the CO2 analyzer. This is the only time that the sample air stream is dried.  At all other times, water vapor dilution of O2 and CO2 is compensated for mathematically, using data from the water vapor and barometric pressure analyzers.  Promethion gas analyzers are the only systems with this capability.

The Promethion CGF flow generator pulls a constant flow of air from up to 16 mouse cages at once, plus a baseline flow.  A conventional multiple-channel pull-flow system requires one separate pump for each pulled air stream. That adds power use, and increases heat dissipation, wear and maintenance even though only one air stream at a time is actually sent to the gas analyzer in a multiplexed system.  The CGF flow generator solves this problem by replacing all but one of these multiple pumps with a single vacuum pump, into which all non-selected gas streams are pulled at a precisely controlled flow rate. Only the selected air stream is pulled through the single sample pump with its flow rate monitored by an accurate, NIST-traceable primary mass flow meter.
